Champaign was established in 1855, when the Illinois Central Railroad put its tracks two miles west of downtown Urbana. Initially called "West Urbana", it was renamed "Champaign" when it obtained a city sanction in 1860. Both the city and district name were gotten from Champaign County, Ohio.
